As a result of these activities, participants should be able to: Recognize high risk situations Analyze work-up of cases that have high morbidity and mortality Suggest algorithms for rapid diagnosis Demonstrate solutions to common airway management issues Apply new devices and approaches to oxygenate and intubate Demonstrate novel approaches in difficult cases to secure an airway Recognize which fractures require immediate orthopedic consultation Review techniques for reduction of common fractures Recognize fractures with high risk for functional complications Review current resistant infections seen in the emergency department Discuss appropriate antibiotic use in these patients Discuss emerging pathogens Discuss causes of the red eye Review management of common diagnoses Identify cases requiring emergent ophthalmologic consultation Analyze causes and management of pain in the sickle cell patient Discuss management of other important complications Review advances in pain management and other therapeutics Distinguish clinical characteristics of mild TBI compared to emergent bleeds and implement follow up plans Select appropriate fluids and electrolyte replacement strategies Diagnosis and treatment of VTE including DVT, SVT, and PE Strategies to manage bleeding from surgical sites, procedural sites and intracranial/intraabdominal life threatening sites in patients both on and not on anticoagulation Common zoonotic infections in the ED from foodborn pathogens and environmental/household exposures Review important statistical concepts needed to evaluate and appraise medical literature Survey of the quality landscape including reviews of patient safety indicators and important hospital metrics
