Description:
Breast cancer is a significant healthcare issue, and screening for breast cancer remains one of the most controversial issues. Mammography screening may be the best approach today to reduce the burden of premature death, but has the potential to cause limitations. Balancing the benefits and limitations of mammography and other imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and sonography, along with assessing the patient’s risk profile for breast cancer and preferences, is an important approach to optimize screening strategies for individual women. This article will look at current screening recommendations, how screening tests are assessed, the benefits and limitations of mammography, as well as the impact of combining other imaging modalities, particularly MRI and sonography, with mammography to enhance predictive value. Other technologies and their potential impact on breast cancer screening will also be evaluated. Breast cancer screening will require a personalized approach that integrates patient-specific and age-dependent metrics of cancer risk with selective application of specific screening technologies best suited to the individual’s age, risk, and breast density.
